Honoring Nick Bassett
July 17, 1992 - January 27, 2022

Nick Bassett passed away at age 29 with his mother Ann, father Vick and loving sister Heather by his side. Nick, a Boone native born into Iowa State fandom, was diagnosed with scoliosis as a toddler. Later, he was discovered to have a spinal cord tumor and was in a wheelchair by high school. In May of 2021 both of his legs we amputated.

Although Nick encountered many adversities throughout his life, he rarely let anything slow him down. He spent his entire life inspiring and giving to others. A 2011 graduate of Boone High School, Nick did everything. He was involved in FFA, 4-H, speech, drama, the school newspaper, and advance choral and swing choir. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, singing, and most of all, sports. He loved the Iowa State Cyclones.

This Iowa State season ticket holder's story became an inspiration to many in the Iowa State community when Cyclone football head coach, Matt Campbell, developed a close friendship with Nick. He invited him to practice and visited him in the hospital shortly before Nick's passing.

Nick and his family are long-time volunteers at the Cattlemen's Beef Quarters. Nick's favorite job was to work in the dining haul, greeting customers and cleaning up tables. After a long shift on those hot summer days, Nick insisted on ordering the Prime Rib Special with two au jus as a night cap.

In honor of Nick's memory, the Facebook special for Thursday, August 18th will feature $2.00 off the Prime Rib Dinner. You must present a picture of the coupon at time of purchase to take advantage of the special. Click here to order a #NickStrong shirt.

John Mortimer, a retired cattle and grain farmer from Dallas County, has served as the General Manager of the Cattlemen's Beef Quarters since its conception in 1985.

John’s not a man to sit still, and rarely does he miss a beat when promoting beef or giving back to his community. This year John will be stepping down from his title as general manager of a legacy that will live on for years to come.

As a way to honor John's 37 years of service to Iowa's beef industry and Iowa State Fair-goers, the Monroe County Cattlemen have selected John to serve as their celebrity during the 40th Annual Iowa Governor's Charity Steer Show on Saturday, August 13th!

The Monroe County Cattlemen purchased Isaiah Wirtjes' steer, named Hot Beef Sundae, at the Monroe County Fair Auction.
